| Philosophy and Mission |
The Southern California Association of Neonatal Nurses (SCANN), a chapter of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN), began in 1989 to provide nurses who work with high-risk neonates an organization to meet their professional needs. SCANN received its charter at the NANN National meeting in New York City in 1991.
The mission of SCANN is to support and promote neonatal nursing by:
1. Educational offerings for continuing education, a venue for networking with nursing colleagues in the community, and an atmosphere for sharing of information about current methods and new trends in neonatal nursing and medicine.
2. A method for monitoring current legislative activity that affects nursing, nursing care and our patients and their families.
3. Participation in community service activities; these activities focus on the well-being of infants, children, and their families.
4. Promote professionalism in nursing and a positive nursing image.

| SCANN for NANN |
SCANN members support NANN through attendance at the National Meetings and by helping to raise money for nursing research and education by providing a "basket" for the annual silent auction. SCANN members have been active at the national level, serving on various committees. Susan Osborne, our founding president, served on the NANN Board of Directors in 1995.
SCANN received NANN's Large Chapter of the Year in 1995.

| Membership |
SCANN's membership meetings are the second Monday of the odd months (i.e. January, March, etc.). Our meetings include a business/networking session and a continuing education offering. Member dues are $30.00 a year and the membership year is from January to January. Membership in NANN is expected. See NANN's website for membership details.
Our elected officers have been diverse in their roles as neonatal nurses representing all "hats". Committees are the backbone of any organization: SCANN's committees. These committees are membership, education, communications, community service, fund raising, and social activities.
|
| Education |
Members at each general membership meeting receive one hour of continuing education credit for the educational offering. Non-members pay a $15.00 fee for the continuing education credit.
SCANN held its first full day conference in 1994 titled "Pathophysiology for Nurses by Nurses"; the faculty was all SCANN members. The conference was a success. SCANN continues to provide an annual full day conference in the fall addressing hot topics in neonatal nursing and medicine.

| Communications |
| We are happy to have our website up and running. SCANN also provides a newsletter for the membership three times a year. The newsletter includes a message from the president, calendar of meetings and events, chapter activities, and highlights of SCANN educational offerings.
|
| Community Service |
SCANN has supported the March of Dimes through participation in WalkAmerica since 1991. The March of Dimes is our ongoing community service project. Over the past 15 years SCANN members and friends have raised close to $20,000. SCANN members have also participated in the March of Dimes Babies and You speaker bureau, presented at a retreat for the March of Dimes volunteers and presented at a March of Dimes Board Meeting.
SCANN members have been active in the international community, teaching in Eastern Europe through Project Concern International and International Relief Teams and in Africa through Health Volunteers Overseas/Nursing Overseas.
